The prolific percussionist, drummer, and music composer Ranjit Barot views the information overload and social media as a double-edged sword. He expresses that while these platforms are empowering, they can also lead to feelings of alienation. Barot believes that many musicians reliant on social media lack the skills to perform in real-life settings, whereas other talented artists struggle with obscurity due to their limited engagement on these platforms. Emphasizing the importance of embracing various trends, Barot suggests the need to discern both the positive and negative impacts they have. He stresses the significance of collaboration in elevating one's skills, mentioning the value of surrounding oneself with individuals who are more skilled. Barot shares his belief that creating music that can stand alongside esteemed artists like Sting, Prince, or Michael Jackson requires depth and significance. Lastly, he acknowledges the challenges in the music industry, noting how despite being widely consumed, music remains one of the least financially rewarding art forms.Subscription services charge a monthly fee, with minimal income going to artists. Today, AI serves as a valuable tool, particularly for those looking for convenience. However, for truly skilled individuals, AI cannot replace their talent. While it may weed out those lacking in abilities, it cannot supplant those with genuine talent and determination. There is a need for more artists to produce high-quality music and transform the music industry. The current state of the music scene in India has been watered down, making it a challenge to create intelligent music. The industry seems to be driven by a complacent group of individuals without clear benchmarks, often swayed by celebrity faces in music videos. However, there is hope, as pockets of good music exist, such as the work of AP Dhillon and Diljit Dosanjh. To shift the landscape, we require more artists committed to creating quality music. Growing up, my biggest inspiration was my mother, Sitara Devi, a renowned classical kathak dancer known for her determination and drive. Her energy and dedication instilled in me a passion for innovation and meaningful connections with others.
